NASS has consistently argued the relevance of the small school model to urban areas. In a follow-up letter to Lord Hill we suggested that in the wake of the urban riots the concept we have been promoting of "Small Schools in the City" had long-term relevance to the range of issues argued to fuel urban unrest and disaffection. We have been invited to discuss this with David McVean, Deputy Director of School Organisation at the DfE with a view to teasing out evidence that may form part of advice to Government. We are also working closely with our partners in Human Scale Education. HSE's new Chair, James Wetz, published his book earlier this year - "Urban Village Schools" - arguing just such a concept of small-scale educational provision in towns and cities.
